Z-siteA Companion to the Works of Louis Zukofsky
“A” 1-7 (unrevised 1932)
In the summer of 1942, LZ revised the first seven movements of “A” (composed 1928-1930)—the only extensive and significant such revision he made to any of his poetry, which usually he almost never altered once allowed into print. The link below presents a critical edition of these movements as published in An “Objectivists” Anthology (1932), where they were printed as a complete sequence. This includes a complete textual apparatus registering emendations and textual variants in the printings of the individual movements in various journals and Pound’s Active Anthology (1933). In addition, there is a earlier unpublished typescript of “A”-1 and -2, with Pound’s mark up of the first two pages of this version. Finally a commentary offers background and a consideration of the implications of LZ’s revisions.
